Let Senko blast your old timber furniture rather than sanding

If your home has timber furniture that are only a few step away from being a self-declared ‘antique’, you have stumbled upon the right blog.

While you are looking around your house, you might be thinking of replacing those old furniture with something new. But because buying furniture costs a lot, we are suggesting you to consider the option of sandblasting it and scrape the old, stale look out of it. Having as-good-as-new furniture while saving pennies; killing two birds with one stone never gets boring, right?

Sanding vs. sandblasting

Now that we have your attention, let’s discuss about sanding and sandblasting a bit before making a decision whether you should go for sanding or the latter.

What sanding does is, it removes the top layer of the furniture to reveal the fresh wood that was protected below. It can be done with different material and techniques and is used to remove brief defects like cutter marks and burns, scratches and indentations, small glue spots and raised grain, but larger defects like gouges, holes or discoloration of the timber cannot be restored with this process.

On the other hand, sandblasting takes a more comprehensive approach. Applications of Sandblasting is huge. It is used to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants. This is a more complicated process too. There are different types of sandblasting for example, shot blasting, glass bead blasting, media blasting, soda blasting. Some of them are milder whereas the others are moderately or strongly abrasive.

Safe to say, sandblasting gives you a big range of options to choose from, whereas that of sanding is limited. With sandblasting, you can refurnish your furniture and add some new attributes too. So, in our opinion, if we are going for revitalizing your things, why not go all the way?

DIY or Professionals?

If you have decided on either of the method, let’s spend a few minutes discussing these two options; whether you should do it yourself, or go to a professional.

Okay, we have to be honest, you CAN do it on your own. The only thing you have to do is, manage the equipment and you are good to go. But then again, there are a few issues to consider. For example,

  • The time you have to spend on the procedure, the effort you have to put to learn operating the equipment and developing the skills to do it correctly, will it really be worth it not going to an expert?
  • Personalization, as we were talking about just a few moments ago, is tough while you are new to the job. But ending up with a so-so task after putting so much effort is definitely not what we were targeting, right?
  • And last of all, equipment for sandblasting are not cheap. So you need to look at the bigger picture and decide.
